Junqueira on Provisional Pole at Long Beach

Brazilian Bruno Junquiera became the first driver to score a Championship point in the 2005 Champ Car season, when he claimed provisional pole in the first qualifying session, ahead of Sunday's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach

Junquiera put his Newman-Haas car in first place, setting the fastest time of the session, less than two tenths of a second ahead of Forsythe's Paul Tracy, and just three tenths of a second ahead of teammate Sebastien Bourdais.

Former F1 driver Justin Wilson finished four tenths of a second behind the top three, outqualifying his RuSport teammate AJ Allmendinger by half a second. Between the two, Walker's Alex Tagliani ended up fifth; Forsythe's Mario Dominquez was sixth; and Andrew Ranger for Mi-Jack finished seventh.

Rounding up the top ten were newcomers Ronnie Bremer and Bjorn Wirdheim for HVM - the Dane outqualifying the Swede.

Surprisingly, though, Kalkhoven's former Champ Car Champion Cristiano da Matta was only 11th fastest, followed by Rocketsports's Timo Glock and Kalhoven teammate Jimmy Vasser.

Rounding up the provisional grid was Rocketsport's other driver this season, Ryan Hunter-Reay; Coyne's Oriol Servia; Mi-Jack's Nelson Philippe; Ricardo Sperafic for Coyne; Marcus Marshall for Walker; and Fabrizio del Monte for Jensen.

The final qualifying session will take place tomorrow.
