John Bolster award: Ross Brawn

Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn has won the John Bolster Award for technical excellence at the 2002 Autosport Awards in London

The Englishman was once again the brains behind the Italian team's success. His famed tactical awareness in races helped Ferrari claim 15 of the 17 grands prix this year. Michael Schumacher smashed records left, right and centre with 11 wins and his fifth world drivers' title, while his team-mate Rubens Barrichello backed him up admirably with four victories.

Brawn was presented with his award by British racing legend Stirling Moss.

"There's so much that goes on back at the factory behind the scenes," said Brawn of Ferrari's team effort. "I feel very proud to be receiving this award.

"Michael Schumacher is a very committed guy, but unfortunately a lot of people don't see all of him. His dedication is incredible in every aspect. I knew him from his sportscar days and he's a very fair guy and you've got to admire his ability.

"Whenever a team achieves domination like we have this year and when a championship doesn't come down to the wire it isn't so exciting. I hope that people look for different things like the performance of the car and the driver.

"F1's going through a difficult time but it's still very strong and we have to be careful not too make too many changes. We're not in crisis, no matter what some people say.
