Irvine: EJ departure is sad

Eddie Irvine has expressed his sadness at the fact that former team boss Eddie Jordan has had to relinquish his role as a Formula 1 team principal because of the increasingly difficult financial situation in the sport

Autosport International

Autosport International is a four-day event motorsport event that includes a two-day trade show for industry professionals and a two-day public show.

Following autosport.com's world exclusive revelation that Jordan has agreed to sell part of his team to Russian entrepreneur Alex Shnaider, the man behind the Midland F1 team, Irvine claimed that the sport will be poorer without him.

"EJ had to get out and it is a shame that people like Eddie can't be in F1 any more and that is the sad fact about it," said Irvine, speaking at the Autosport International show. "It costs too much money now and why would you sponsor Jordan when there are teams like Ferrari and McLaren out there?

"Money is a big factor that has taken things away from F1 - you have got these [manufacturer] teams who come in and out when they please."

He added: "I think the owner-managers were what was fantastic about F1, men like Colin Chapman - they are the real characters. The corporate people are just hired to do a job."
