Interview: Hill enjoys first test

Following his maiden test run in a Grand Prix Masters car at Silverstone yesterday, Damon Hill talks to Dieter Rencken about the experience and the possibility of racing against the likes of Emerson Fittipaldi

DR: Damon, after your first runs in a GP Masters car, how did it go?

DH: "Fascinating, and very enjoyable, and I would like to thank every one at GP Masters for giving me the opportunity, really."

DR: Has the test whetted your appetite to do some more testing with a view to racing in the series?

DH: "We'll see ... I don't know quite how one gets the driving of racing cars at speeds out of your system completely. I suppose it helps if you don't keep coming back and having another go!

"You know, you always ask yourself what it would be like to have another go at racing, you sort of always ask yourself that question. I've really enjoyed it, so let's leave it at that..."

DR: How many laps did you do?

DH: "I did about 30 laps."

DR: Will you be doing a demonstration run this weekend at Silverstone?

DH: "I might be doing a two-seater run, I think. But I'll be very keen to come up and see the race. It's a great atmosphere, and I've never had a chance of meeting half the guys on the grid here in a racing environment.

"They were guys who were racing when I was on my way up, and so, I suppose, for me it's the closest I'll ever get to racing with my Dad."

DR: Well, Emerson (Fittipaldi) raced against your father...

DH: "Yes, Emerson did, lots of the guys did. No, actually, Emerson is probably the only one, yes ... but there is a spirit here (in the series) which is great, there's a lot of spirit in these guys."

DR: How does the GPM car stack up to your last Formula One car (the Jordan)?

DH: "Well, not too dissimilar. The tyres are probably the biggest difference. The cars are a bit heavier. They're quite forgiving to drive, but you still have to muscle them around.

"But I think you can see now that the difference between an F1 car (and a GPM car) is that the F1 car is at so much more of a peak than these cars are. There's more of a comfort zone with these cars, but at this age you need that!"

DR: Overall, you enjoyed it?

DH: "I enjoyed it, yes, very much."
