Haberfeld tests for Walker

Formula 3000 racer Mario Haberfeld tested a Champ Car for the time this week when he drove for Walker Racing at the Firebird road course in Phoenix

The Brazilian, who raced for Team Astromega this season in the grand prix-support series, ran on Tuesday and Wednesday in Tora Takagi's Reynard-Toyota. Conditions were tough, with temperatures reaching 108 degrees.

Haberfeld will attend next week's Miami CART race and is seeking a drive for 2003.

"The car's a lot more fun to drive than an F3000," he said. "There was a lot more power to contend with, and the gearbox and brakes are a lot better. But it wasn't too hard to adapt, and by the second or third run we were doing quite good times."

As Haberfeld admitted, the test does not necessarily mean that Walker will sign him for next year. "The Walker team was very good," he said. "Very friendly but professional at the same time. Derrick [Walker, team owner] has given me an opportunity so I appreciate what he's done. But there's a long way to go before next season, so we'll see what happens."
