'Groovy' Homestead nears completion
Work is winding down on the $10m, computer-designed, variable racing surface that has been installed by ISC to promote exciting track action at its Homestead-Miami Speedway continuous-turn oval in Florida. The surface width has been reduced from 75ft to 55ft and the 6deg banking replaced by three 'grooves' at 18deg, 19deg and 20deg. Track president Curtis Gray predicts completion on schedule to coincide with the Ford Championship Weekend over November 13-16
Goodyear has been able to schedule tyre tests in October, and there will be no official NASCAR-scheduled testing for teams on the track prior to the week of the Craftsman Truck Series, Busch Series and Winston Cup events. Instead, the November race week will be expanded with open practice sessions for the trucks on Monday, Busch cars on Tuesday and Cup racecars on Wednesday. Each day will involve eight hours of practice and fans will be admitted to watch.
The Indy Racing League has scheduled its first race on the new configuration on February 29, 2004.
