Grapevine: Winslow to feature in TV series
Briton James Winslow will feature in a documentary series on UK television later this month
The BBC series, Accidental Heroes, focuses on bravery in life threatening situations and one episode will relive the moment in the Asian Formula 3 race at Sentul, Indonesia in 2006 when Winslow rescued Moreno Soeprapto from his crashed car before it burst into flames.
The pair had been battling on track when Soeprapto clipped the back of Winslow, was catapulted into the air, and barrel rolled into a tyre wall. Winslow rushed to his rival's aid, switched off the fuel pump, and dragged him clear of the wreckage before it erupted.
The Briton went on to win the restarted race that afternoon, and later the championship. He received the Gregor Grant award at the Autosport Awards that year and the Royal Humane Society's bronze medallion from the royal family.
"It was one of those situations where you really don't have time to think," he recalled. "The car was upside down and his head was against the barrier, and I knew I just had to try to get him out."
Winslow went on to win the Asian-based Formula Renault V6 Championship in 2007, and currently leads the Australian F3 Championship as well as driving for Team Great Britain in A1GP rookie sessions.
