Government backing assured says Stewart
Sir Jackie Stewart is optimistic about landing government backing for Silverstone and the British motorsport industry as a whole. "I think there will be support for all avenues of the industry and the sport. Most people will be well pleased with the outcome," he said at a press briefing yesterday. "I can't discuss money at the moment but this is bigger than just holding on to the race for the next few years. This is looking at the long-term for an event that supports an industry."
The president of the British Racing Drivers' Club left the conference early to attend talks with Patricia Hewitt, the secretary of trade and industry, saying it was about time the sport was backed by the government. "Over the last five years, cricket has been given £54m, bowling has been given £27m, and people will know I like my shooting - a sport that has received £11m. We haven't had any benefit so far but I think that is going to be rectified."
Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Frank Williams were also at the conference at Silverstone. "Speaking as an Englishman, seven out of 10 grand prix teams are in Britain and the race has an enormous emotional content," said Williams. "It has been explained to dear old Bernie that if it was removed it would be a great disappointment. There are a number of circuits that are way behind Silverstone."
