Gordon out of ROC
Jeff Gordon has withdrawn from this weekend's Race of Champions, the the end-of-season Race of Champions event at the Stade de France in Paris
Gordon was supposed to comprise half of the US team alongside Hendrick Nextel Cup team-mate Jimmie Johnson. But a severe case of the flu has sidelined the four-time NASCAR champion, who was forced to spend Wednesday night in hospital after he became dehydrated. He cancelled his trip to France as well as NASCAR's parade through the streets of New York on Thursday.
There is no word yet on a replacement driver for Gordon, who finished third in this year's Nextel Cup standings behind champion Kurt Busch and Johnson.
Even with Gordon's withdrawal, the Race of Champions event has never boasted such a star-studded line-up, with Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, world rally champion Sebastien Loeb, IndyCar Series winner Tony Kanaan and Champ Car Sebastien Bourdais all participating.
So far 54,000 tickets have been sold and organisers announced on Friday morning that just 6,000 seats were left.
