Fernandez plans race return
Adrian Fernandez is hoping to return to the cockpit this weekend after intense physical therapy following his Toronto shunt
The Mexican suffered pelvic injuries in a multi-car shunt and was forced to miss the last round at Mid-Ohio. He was replaced by Max Papis for that race and the Italian is being kept on stand-by in case Fernandez is too uncomfortable in the car.
"I still cannot put more than 50 percent of my weight on my left side and I am still very stiff," said Fernandez. "I still use crutches to get around. The swelling has gone down dramatically and the bruises are starting to disappear, but there is still some fluid there. Compared to where I was, however, I am much better. I can see the progress."
Tom Anderson, managing director of Fernandez Racing explained the team's approach to this weekend's race.
"Our plan is to go to Elkhart Lake with one car prepared for Adrian and one for Max. "We will put Adrian in the car for the first practice session on Friday and see how he fares. If he is unable to drive then Max will take over again this weekend."
Papis, a three-time race winner in CART, retired from his first race for the team with mechanical problems after qualifying 14th.
