Enge welcomes unexpected win
Tomas Enge didn't believe victory in the final round of the A1 Grand Prix season at Shanghai was possible going into this weekend
Enge scored his Czech Republic team's maiden A1 Grand Prix victory in the Feature Race at Shanghai, having passed Alex Yoong's Malaysian car on lap six of the 30-lap main event.
The former Formula One, sportscar and IRL racer only started the race seventh, but a great start and slick pit work had helped him work his way into contention.
However, Enge didn't believe it was possible after a poor run of results this season with only a brace of fifth places previously in 2006.
"It really is an amazing win," Enge told autosport.com. "Before this weekend I didn't think something like this could happen. In 2006 we've had such bad results that I just wasn't expecting a win like this.
"It is really special feeling. I knew I just had to stay clean in the Sprint Race to get me a reasonable start in the Feature and then I made an amazing start and gained a lot of places. It was perfect.
"Then my guys got me a really good stop in the pits and won me some places. Within a lap I could pass Yoong. I was amazed. I was in the lead and I couldn't believe it.
"Then I just seemed to be pulling away. I was nervous towards the middle of the race I and I thought I was developing understeer but the balance sorted itself out and I moved on.
"I thought Yoong would get faster, but he didn't and I was holding on."
Enge went off the circuit to complete donuts for the crowd on his slowing down lap, to celebrate his first victory of any kind since he won the GTS class of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2003 in the Prodrive-built Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello.
"I don't really count wins in the Czech Touring car championship, so it was my first proper win since Le Mans," he added.
