Driver killed in Mosport Trans-Am pile-up
One driver was killed and another seriously injured in a horrific crash in Sunday's Trans-Am race at Mosport in Canada
Mike Gagliardo, 46, was pronounced dead at Lakeridge Heath Center in Bowmanville following the accident which also involved 25-year-old Gary Longo. Gagliardo's Chevrolet Corvette made contact with the similar machine of Randy Ruhlman at Mosport's first corner, hit a barrier and rebounded back on to the track.
Longo's Panoz Esperante then T-boned the stationary Corvette at high speed, which was hidden in a cloud of dust. The race was red-flagged for more than 40 minutes while both drivers were removed from their cars.
"Racing should never end like this, it's a happy day turned sad," said Tommy Archer, who finished the restarted race in second place. "We'll remember the families of the drivers who were involved in the accident in our next races, because I'm sure they would want us to keep going."
Gagliardo was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, while Longo was conscious at the scene and airlifted to Sunnybrook Medical Center in Toronto, where he is listed in a critical condition.
Former SCCA National Sports 2000 Champion Gagliardo was making his first appearance in Trans-Am this year. He is survived by wife Meggan and two children, Michael and Kate.
