De Marco wins, Stoneman seals title

Nicola de Marco scored his second victory of the Formula 2 season at Valencia today, while ninth place was enough for Dean Stoneman to clinch the title

De Marco led away from pole and was shadowed by Will Bratt throughout the race as the pair moved well clear of the rest of the field. But Bratt was unable to pose much of a threat and de Marco ticked off the laps to his second win in five races.

"That was a fantastic race, I'm really happy with it," de Marco said. "Will stayed near me for the whole race so it was difficult, but it was really important for me to make another win."

Armaan Ebrahim was a lonely third for much of the way, but slipped back to the battle for fourth towards the end. That queue was initially headed by front row starter Benjamin Lariche as he came under pressure from Philipp Eng and Sergei Afanasiev behind. Then came the battle containing the championship protagonists with Jolyon Palmer heading Benjamin Bailly and Stoneman.

Lariche was passed by Eng and Afanasiev in the last couple of laps and then squeezed the next trio together as he fell back. Bailly had a go at Palmer but couldn't get by, while Stoneman was content to watch from behind know he'd done enough to seal the crown.

"It's fantastic to be sitting in this position," said Stoneman. "Hopefully now with the Formula 1 test I can prove myself and go further on in motorsport."

Kazim Vasiliauskas rolled out of the race on the first lap after his wheels were clipped by Kelvin Snoeks in the middle of Turn 1.
