Jean-Louis Schlesser took the overall lead of the Dakar-Cairo Rally after taking 20 minutes off Kenjiro Shinozuka. Last year's champion won the 12th stage - the longest special of the event - four seconds ahead of Jose Maria Servia. Shinozuka, who had led the rally since the second stage, fell to third overall following an impressive stage time by Stephane Peterhansel Schlesser, 'We drove fast (an average of nearly 127 km/h) and Henri (Magne) did a good job with the navigation. 'We wanted to gain time today, and if possible take the number one spot. Mission accomplished - though anything could happen - there's still 3000 km to go.'
