Da Matta aims to equal win record

CART champion Cristiano da Matta can tie the record for the most wins in a single Champ Car season, if he triumphs at CART's first race in Mexico City this weekend

If the Brazilian wins the event, his last Champ Car race before his switch to Formula 1 with Toyota, it will be his eighth victory of the season. This will tie the series record currently shared by Michael Andretti and Al Unser Jr.

"I am looking forward to the race in Mexico City," said da Matta. "The place is going to be packed - which isn't a surprise, considering what we are used to in Monterrey. The layout is very nice, from what I have seen. I actually have an old computer game that is pretty similar except for the last turn, which has been changed."

"It's going to be pretty special for me because it will be my last with Newman/Haas Racing, at least for a while. I don't want to think about that until after the race is over though."

CART itself is looking to break records in Mexico City. Should the crowd total more than 286,562 CART will set a new record for the highest ever attendance in a single season. Series officials are optimistic that the weekend's attendance could be over 318,000 which would break the current record for attendance at a single event, set at Monterrey, Mexico in 2000.
