Corvette drivers happy for team
GT1 drivers' champions Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta have said that this year's title was more satisfying because of the performance penalties they suffered during the year
The Corvette's were handed several weight penalties and smaller air restrictors to keep the playing field level with their Aston Martin rivals in GT1, and ALMS officials were constantly reviewing the equality of the cars.
The championship battle remained tight, but Gavin and Beretta retained their drivers' title, while Corvette won the manufacturers' crown for a sixth consecutive year.
"This is my fourth ALMS title but this is the sweetest," said Beretta, who also won two titles with the Oreca team in 1999 and 2000. "We wanted to show that Corvette is still number one, even with all the handicaps we've been given this year."
Gavin added: "This season has had some ups and downs, some great racing and some frustrating racing, but in the end we've come through."
The pair only had to finish last weekend at Laguna Seca to win the drivers' title, but pushed hard to ensure their team also secured their championship.
"Corvette Racing is a great team and has given us a great car," said Beretta, "so we forgot about the drivers' championship because really wanted to win the manufacturers' championship for them as well."
