Class merger planned for British GT
The BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club) might combine the current GTO (FIA N-GT) and GT classes in its 2003 British GT Championship. Performance levels would be equalised by an undisclosed method. The measure, aimed at maximising the number and variety of cars racing for the outright title, is in response to falling numbers of GT class entrants. However, if sufficient cars (60% of the field) are registered for the GT class, the current separate classes will continue
In either circumstance, a new, entry-level 'Cup' class for cars running below the current GTO specification will be introduced. This has been designed dramatically to increase the number of eligible cars. It is hoped that manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, Panoz, TVR and Vauxhall will be represented.
A further new feature for 2003 will be the introduction of varying race lengths and formats. The current one-hour format will be retained for some races, but there will also be events of two hours and three hours, and meetings featuring two 45-minute races.
The dates and venues for the 2003 championship are yet to be announced, but the BRDC has confirmed that it will be an 11-round series that will avoid clashes with events such as Le Mans and FIA GT championship rounds. It will include a major European venue.
