CART planning 475bhp Atlantic formula
Champ Car promoter CART plans to relaunch its Toyota Atlantic 'junior' single-seater formula in 2005 with a much more powerful engine. "It's clearly CART's responsibility to put together a mechanism to develop young drivers," said CEO Chris Pook. "We need a 475bhp racecar with minimal downforce and narrow tyres, so that it's difficult to drive. We've got to get it back to the basics." CART reports positive interest from its existing engine supplier
"We're working flat-out at making our 'ladder' series more efficient and effective, so that we can give particularly young Americans a chance at participating," Pook told AUTOSPORT's Gordon Kirby. "It's got to be about set-up, and about the driver giving feedback. We don't need a mass of computer technology that sends signals back to an engineer sitting in a bus someplace."
There is a possibility that Toyota could supply a more powerful engine for the class, but Pook clearly has other options. "We have to deliver value to the engine manufacturer, and we have to package that in the right class, and that's what we're doing," he added. "We're still hoping that Toyota can give us the engine we want. They've been very responsive [to our ideas] so far."
