Carpentier makes his apologies
Patrick Carpentier apologised to Gil de Ferran and Roberto Moreno after inadvertently holding up their battle for the lead in the closing laps at Portland
Carpentier, who had earlier delayed Helio Castroneves while he was heading the field, blocked de Ferran several times in the final few laps as the Brazilian tried to fend off fast-closing countryman Moreno.
When de Ferran finally got past, Carpentier then began blocking Moreno, preventing the Patrick Racing driver from going after his Penske rival.
"I guess I gave them too much of a hard time," Carpentier admitted afterwards. "The team was telling me to let some guys by and not let some other guys by so I was having a hard time working out who to let past."
Carpentier was trying to defend his tenth position from Shinji Nakano at the time, while closing on ninth-placed Dario Franchitti.
"I was fighting for a position," Carpentier explained. "I'm sorry for the leaders but I was only trying to get some points."
Japanese driver Takuya Kurosawa was given an official reprimand for blocking after last week's Detroit race and it remains to be seen if CART will impose any kind of penalty on Carpentier.
