Canadian F1 delegation in Budapest

Canadian government delegates will be in Hungary this weekend to lobby FOM principal Bernie Ecclestone and the team owners, with a view to restoring the Canadian GP to the 2004 calendar. Minister Martin Cauchon said: "I actually can't wait to have a meeting with Mr Ecclestone. I want to hear what he has to say about the [tobacco] exemptions that exist for France, Britain and the USA." The Hungarian GP clashes with the annual Molson Indy CART Champ Car race in Montreal

Cauchon will argue that the race on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is more popular than the US GP at Indianapolis, and that it is valuable to F1. "It's fine to say that the race offers CDN$80m in economic benefits for the city of Montreal," he said, "but there are also financial benefits for F1. The grand prix is an exceptional vehicle for Mr Ecclestone. It works both ways."

The delegation will be also include representatives of the Quebec provincial government, the mayor of Montreal and city tourism officials, and race promoter Normand Legault.
