BTCC – Thompson denies Muller
As expected the 2002 British Touring Car Championship was pretty much a Vauxhall benefit, with the Astra Coupe taking victory in all but five of the 20 races
All four of the works drivers shared in the glory, but the championship boiled down to a three-way fight between Matt Neal, Yvan Muller and James Thompson. None of the trio had taken the title before and for Neal, and Muller in particular, it was a case of better luck next time.
Thompson was a worthy champion; taking more wins than his rivals (six compared to Muller's five and Neal's three) and generally managing to stay out of trouble when it mattered, although he was nearly undone by a string of engine problems, which cost him points as the four unit limit was exceeded.
As the season wore on, MG and Honda grew in competitiveness, albeit aided by the success ballast that weighed down the championship leaders. Nevertheless, the three wins scored by MG and two by Honda was nothing less than they deserved.
Dan Eaves and Aaron Slight took the fight for the Independents' crown down to the wire, with Peugeot man Eaves claiming the honour by just three points. James Kaye had things more his own way in the Production class, wrapping up the title with a round in hand.
