Brno Superstars: Thomas Biagi snatches last-gasp pole

Thomas Biagi took a last-gasp pole position for the first Superstars International Series race at Brno

The Romeo Ferraris Mercedes driver left his run very late, grabbing top spot from Giovanni Berton with just seconds remaining on the clock.

Biagi's best of 2m08.715s was good enough by just 0.04 seconds.

Berton, who was no higher than seventh in practice, held on to lock down a surprising front-row spot for Dinamic BMW.

Tonio Liuzzi was third, the ex-Formula 1 driver finally hitting his strides after two quiet practice sessions in his Romeo Ferraris Mercedes.

A 2m08.813s was enough to edge out practice two pacesetter Fabrizio Giovanardi (Petri Corse Porsche), who is making his first appearance in Superstars in almost three years.

Gianni Morbidelli (Audi Sport Italia RS5) looked strong in the first part of the session, dropping into the 2m08s bracket on his very first lap. Unfortunately that ended up being the best he could do, eventually slipping to fifth by the end of the session.

Luigi Ferrara rounded out the third row for Roma Racing Mercedes, while the BMW pairing of Max Mugelli (Dinamic) and Edoardo Piscopo (RGA Sportmanship) locked out row four.

Christian Klien made it four BMWs in the top 10 in the Giudici entry, while Francesco Sini finished 10th after failing to improve enough on his impressive practice pace in the Solaris Chevrolet.
