British Rally Championship gets Nations Cup

A new Nations Cup team competition will be introduced into the British Rally Championship in 2003, for privateers only. At least two of the four cars must be two-wheel-drive, and one from the Formula 1600 class driven by a driver under 22 years of age on December 31, 2003. All team cars must have a mechanical-shift gearbox with a maximum of five forward gears. Super 1600, 1600 kit variants, Group A and WRC cars homologated after 1997 will not be eligible

"The idea of the Nations Cup is to encourage young, amateur and foreign drivers with limited budgets into the British Rally Championship," explained BRC manager Mark Taylor. "The first step is to form a committee made up of the team captains. I'm already talking to likely participants, and we're hoping to get teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Scandinavia and Europe."

The first task of the committee will be to detail the selection process and agree on the rules, and Taylor is hoping to chair the first committee meeting by the beginning of December. The rules should be ratified by December 31.
