British Comp. Driver: Jenson Button
Jenson Button has been named as British Competition Driver of the Year at the AUTOSPORT Awards
Autosport Awards
The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.
The 29-year-old Brawn driver became Britain's 10th Formula 1 world champion this year after taking six wins from the first seven grands prix for Ross Brawn's team.
He beat off competition from IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti and IRC title-winner Kris Meeke to take the prize.
Upon receiving his award from Gavin and Stacey co-creator James Corden, who nearly upstaged him with his post-race TV antics at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Button said: "Things have come a long way in a year.
"It's a year and two days since we found out that Honda was pulling out of Formula 1, and coming here last year was pretty tough. We all got our heads down and this is the result, so a big thank you to everyone in the Brawn team.
"It's a very special feeling to be stood here as world champion."
Button, who will switch to McLaren next season alongside fellow Briton Lewis Hamilton, has won the award twice before, in 2003 and 2006.
