BRDC Facing More Turmoil

Silverstone's owner, the British Racing Drivers' Club, is at the centre of fresh controversy after reports emerged on Wednesday that a member of its staff has allegedly defrauded the club of £300,000

According to a report in Motorsport News, a member of the BRDC staff was arrested earlier this month and interviewed by police amid allegations that he had forged cheques. Although it is understood no charges have been made so far, the unidentified staff member had had his contract terminated last October.

The BRDC has employed a group of accountants to investigate the matter, to try and find out exactly what happened and what steps can be taken to prevent a repeat in the future.

BRDC chief executive Alex Hooton was quoted as saying by Motorsport News: "An independent firm has been instructed to investigate how this all happened. We will be reviewing our accounting procedures."

The latest BRDC controversy comes after months of turmoil in the club. Last year it faced an intense battle to secure the future of the British Grand Prix, before the start of 2005 was marred by the removal of Ray Bellm as chairman of the club after a dispute with president Jackie Stewart, who has subsequently chosen to take a step back in his activities.
