BRDC Award: Gil de Ferran

The British Racing Drivers' Club has given US open wheel racing star Gil de Ferran an honorary membership

The Brazilian retired at the end of this season after a highly successful career. After rising through the British junior formulae, de Ferran switched to the US racing scene, rapidly becoming a Champ Car front-runner with Walker Racing.

De Ferran's most successful period came when he signed to drive for the legendary Penske Racing outfit for the 2000 season. He won back-to-back CART crowns before switching to the IRL IndyCar Series with the team.

He was a contender for the title in both his seasons in the IRL, and took victory in this year's Indianapolis 500. His final race came at Texas this year, where de Ferran rounded out his career with an emphatic win.

De Ferran received his prize from motorsport legend - and his former team boss - Jackie Stewart.

"It's been nine years since I moved to America," said de Ferran, "but it seems like it was just yesterday that I left. I owe a lot of my achievements to the people in this room, so thank you."
