BAR considers litigation against PPGI

The BAR F1 team in Brackley, UK, says it is taking legal advice regarding possible actions for defamation and/or commercial slander against France Corbeil of SAM Partnership Production Group International. Last Wednesday, PGGI obtained a court order in Monaco to seize three of the team's F1 cars, alleging non-payment of commission due five years ago in respect of a sponsorship deal with former BAR sponsor Teleglobe. The matter will be settled at a hearing on June 26

BAR says that it was only earlier this year that the current management team was made aware of the claim when Corbeil forwarded a demand for the commission. BAR claims that Corbeil's claim is baseless and points out that, when it was first presented to a Monaco court several weeks ago, it was rejected.

The claim was again presented to the court with additional information on Wednesday afternoon, just prior to a national holiday weekend when the courts were closed. As a result, says BAR, it was not made aware of the action and did not have any opportunity to respond, and therefore Judge Philippe Narmino granted Corbeil a seizure order in a private capacity (without the assistance of the court or the police).

A BAR spokesperson said this morning: "A representative of France Corbeil did turn up at the track in Monaco, with paperwork that had no substance at all. We don't believe that this claim has any legal basis but there will be full clarification after the hearing on June 26."
