Autosport names International Racing Driver of the Year Award nominees

Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Scott Dixon and Antonio Felix da Costa are the 2020 nominees for Autosport's prestigious International Racing Driver of the Year Award presented by Pirelli

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

This year's edition of the Autosport Awards will be online, with increased digital coverage, and will continue the tradition of celebrating the best of the motorsport season.

The International Racing Driver Award presented by Pirelli is open to professional racing drivers competing at an international level. It has been won by 16 Formula 1 world champions - including Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher - since being introduced in 1982.

Seven-time F1 world champion Hamilton has won the accolade seven times and this year is up against his on-track rival Verstappen, six-time IndyCar title winner Dixon and top Formula E driver da Costa.

Autosport.com subscribers and magazine readers are able to vote for the nominee they think performed best in each category during the season. The winners will be announced in December, again across multiple digital platforms, as well as Autosport magazine, which is celebrating its 70th birthday in 2020.

International Racing Driver presented by Pirelli nominees

Scott Dixon
In a championship as competitive as IndyCar it's remarkable that Dixon managed to secure his sixth crown in 2020. Winning the first three races was crucial as Penske's Josef Newgarden put on a late charge, but the Ganassi star held firm to take the title by 16 points.

Antonio Felix da Costa
The Portuguese bid farewell to BMW Andretti and arrived at DS Techeetah with double champion Jean-Eric Vergne as his team-mate. But rather than settle in second place, da Costa was a phenomenon. A hat-trick of pole positions and race wins mid-season earned him a brilliant Formula E title, his first championship win since 2009.

Lewis Hamilton
It was another remarkable season for Formula 1's benchmark driver. First he matched and then broke Michael Schumacher's all-time wins record, then he helped Mercedes to an unprecedented seventh consecutive constructors' crown before continuing his march towards his seventh drivers' title, which he secured in Turkey.

Max Verstappen
That F1 races in 2020 were often three-way fights between the two Mercedes drivers and Max Verstappen showed just how brilliant the Red Bull driver is. The Dutchman was miles ahead of the rest and is clearly ready for a championship challenge, but will he get the chance?
