The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.
Ogier clinched a fourth-straight WRC title with Volkswagen with two events to spare in Spain in October, and won six of the year's 13 rallies.
While he grappled with the WRC's contentious and now-dropped running order rules, Ogier only finished two rallies off the podium.
In what became the dominant Volkswagen's final season as a works team, as it announced its exit in November, the best of Ogier's team-mates in the championship - Andreas Mikkelsen in third - only managed 57% of the Frenchman's points haul.
Ogier's future is uncertain following VW's exit, but he has tested M-Sport and the incoming Toyota's new-generation 2017 WRC cars in recent weeks.
"First of all I would like to say I'm very proud to be rally driver of the year," said Ogier in a video message.
"I would like to thank all the readers of Autosport, It's a great pleasure.
"I'm very sorry not to be there tonight - it's a tough time at the moment and I prefer to spend my energy on sorting my future. Thanks a lot."
Kris Meeke and Craig Breen - who impressed in partial WRC campaigns with the satellite PH Sport Citroen outfit - were among the other nominees along with Hyundai's Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon, and Dakar winner Stephane Peterhansel.
