Audi sign Luhr and Rockenfeller

Audi have signed former Porsche sportscar stars Lucas Luhr and Mike Rockenfeller for their DTM and sportscar projects

The German pair will race in the DTM next year, but they have been signed for their sportscar experience as well.

Both raced for Porsche in the American Le Mans Series last year, and they will also be involved in Audi's sportscar projects with the R10.

Audi's motorsport boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich said: "It is important to us that our drivers can also make a valuable contribution to our sportscar project. Lucas and Mike can do this.

"I'm convinced that they are a strong addition to our driver line-up and they will fit in at Audi very soon."

Luhr won the LMP2 class championship in the ALMS this year with Porsche, and the 27-year-old is looking forward to stepping up to the LMP1 class.

"At Audi I finally get the chance to fight for overall victories," he said. "I'm incredibly pleased about the DTM, the R10 and the opportunity to work with Audi Sport."

The majority of Rockenfeller's experience has come in the GT2 class of sportscar racing, although he made one appearance in the Porsche RS Spyder towards the end of the year.

"I've realised a dream by securing a factory contract with Audi," he said. "The DTM is a tremendous target and excellent alternative to Formula One for every young German racing driver."

Audi have confirmed that Luhr will definitely race the Audi R10, while Rockenfeller's involvement with the sportscar project has not been made clear yet.

However, Dr Ullrich added: "Mike has demonstrated impressively at the wheel of the LMP2 Porsche and in the Grand-Am Series that he also possesses the necessary talent for the R10."

Audi have traditionally used drivers for multiple projects. Tom Kristensen competes in the DTM and races in the Le Mans 24 hours, while Emanuele Pirro, Frank Biela and Allan McNish have all competed in the DTM, ALMS and Le Mans within the same season.
