Audi claim a one-two at Long Beach

Audi fought through the LMP2 cars to take a surprise one-two finish in the Long Beach round of the American Le Mans Series, with Marco Werner and Lucas Luhr leading teammates Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela home

Penske Porsche dominated the first half of the race only to fade and fall to fourth and fifth overall later on, losing the LMP2 class win to the Highcroft Acura, which completed the overall top three, on the penultimate lap.

Pat Long had jumped from fourth to first in the No.6 Penske Porsche at the start of the race, leading teammate Timo Bernhard and Fernandez Acura's Luis Diaz in the opening laps.

But Luhr steadily crept into contention for Audi in the opening stint, moving up from an initial sixth place to third - right on the Porsches' tails - within the first half an hour. He then took second from Bernhard, before coming in for an early pit stop and handing over to Werner after 45 minutes.

Penske stayed out for a further ten minutes and briefly made a break from the Audi, rejoining 10 seconds clear of Werner and with Bernhard's co-driver Romain Dumas now ahead of Long's partner Sascha Maassen.

But moments later a caution for debris brought the lead group back together again, and both Penske drivers found themselves unable to maintain the pace in the final stint.

Maassen was passed by both Werner and Pirro shortly after the restart and subsequently fell back into the clutches of Highcroft driver David Brabham, who was mounting a scintillating charge through the field having taken over from teammate Scott Sharp.

Werner then closed in on Dumas, taking the lead with 20 minutes to go. A final caution to retrieve the spun Intersport Lola gave Pirro a chance to make it an Audi one-two, and he duly vaulted past Dumas on the restart.

While Werner edged away to secure Audi's win, Dumas didn't give up and put Pirro under plenty of pressure in the closing minutes. But the Penske driver was himself being pursued by the flying Brabham - who dived ahead on the penultimate lap to take third overall and Highcroft's first ever LMP2 win.

Maassen followed close behind in fifth place, with Christian Fittipaldi securing sixth for Andretti-Green Acura with a late move on Diaz's co-driver Adrian Fernandez, who also lost out to Dyson Porsche driver Butch Leitzinger as he tried to regain momentum.

The racing was even closer in GT2, with the Flying Lizard Porsches heading an extremely tight five-car lead battle in the first stint.

But when the class leaders all pitted under yellow at half-distance, Tafel Ferrari chose to only change two tyres on the Dirk Muller/Dominik Farnbacher car, allowing the German driver to jump to the head of the pack.

Muller then resisted enormous pressure from Flying Lizard duo Wolf Henzler and Patrick Pilet to clinch the GT2 win - all three cars covered by just 0.5 seconds at the flag.

GT1 was more straightforward, with Jan Magnussen and Johnny O'Connell leading Corvette teammates Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta throughout.
