Andros: Muller leads after qualifiers

Yvan Muller recovered from a poor start in the sixth round of the 1999/2000 Andros Trophy to lead after the three qualifying heats.

Fifth after practice, Muller's Opel Astra had a gearbox failure during the first three-lap heat.

He came back to win the second heat, despite having to drive with three much slower cars.

Jean-Philippe Dayraut, with one win and a second place, was leading after the first day, followed by Marcel Tarrès and Pierre Colard.

The third session was therefore to be decisive.

The temperature was around minus four, with the ice hard and covered with a thin layer of fresh snow.

Yvan Muller was first amongst his direct rivals to take to the ice, and with three laps in the low fifty seconds, his time of 2:30.425 proved impossible to beat.

The Nissan team, who had struggled somewhat during the earlier heats, finally found the right settings for the conditions, and experienced ice-racer Jean-Pierre Malcher came closest to Muller's time.

Pierre Colard, in the Peugeot 306, was third fastest, ahead of Opel's Jean-Philippe Dayraut and Eric Helary. Marcel Tarrès, second and third in Saturday's heats, was unable to complete the third session, his rear steering failing on the first lap.

Overall, Muller leads after qualifying, followed by his Opel team-mate Dayraut, with Tarrès third and Nissan's Malcher fourth.

In the Promotion class for cars with 2-wheel steering, Laurent Fouquet and Guyhelm Dussaucy continue to be the fastest cars on the ice this weekend.

Although Renaul Clio driver Fouquet set the best time in the third heat, Dussaucy's Nissan Micra leads after qualifying.
