Andros: Dayraut beats Muller
After two wins for Yvan Muller in the 1999/2000 Andros ice-racing season, it was the turn of Opel team-mate Jean-Philippe Dayraut to shine as he took his first Andros win at the Alpe d'Huez.
After two qualifying round victories, and leading from pole to chequered flag in his 10-lap final, he led an Opel one-two three ahead of Muller and Helary.
Marcel Tarrès, usually a contender for the podium, finished well down the classification after two poor qualifying rounds.
'It was too easy to start with,' Muller said.
'We were unlucky. I think we were too fast. We were tempting fate, and it threw us down. In the six years I've done the Andros, I've only lost a round stupidly like this twice.'
His morning was ruined by a problem in the 3rd round, caused by a broken gear-box.
'I lost fifth gear. For the second and third laps, I avoided it.'
Muller's weekend went from bad to worse after he spun in the final.
'I tried to do a 360° spin, just to see if I could do it.
'The weekend had gone badly, and I wanted to finish in a spectacular way. It was silly - but if I'd succeeded, I'd have been a genius. But it went wrong, so I'm an idiot.'
'The good side of this weekend is the result for Opel. It was a good operation, and we finished one-two-three.'
In the Promotion category, Christophe Balas confirmed the Subaru Forester's potential as an ice-racer, winning the category when the leader after qualifying, Guyhlem Dussaucy, planted his Nissan in the wall during the finale.
Pierre Colard, the only driver competing in the 2-litre category, came in fifth overall, behind James Ruffier's Tigra.
After three races, Yvan Muller retains the lead of the Trophy, with while Opel further increased their lead in the manufacturers classification.
