Andretti takes points lead
Michael Andretti's second place Michigan on Sunday has vaulted him into a 14-point lead over previous points leader Roberto Moreno. The American is the first to break the 100-point barrier this season, and is the first of the major players to make a break in a season where no one driver has had a significant advantage for long
Moreno was unable to add to his 90-point tally in Michigan, after a win at Cleveland and a podium at Toronto, but still holds second place. Early season leader Paul Tracy has 80 points, while Penske's Gil de Ferran, rarely far from the pace this year, has 75 points.
Juan Montoya's second victory of the year has moved him to within a point of de Ferran, and he seems set to climb the leaderboard further as the Lola-Toyota package strengthens.
Dario Franchitti moved to 11th with 58 points after a strong third, two points ahead of Penske's young charger Helio Castroneves, who is equal on points with Max Papis. The pack jostling for 7th to 12th is covered by just 10 points, and any one of Kenny Brack, Patrick Carpentier, Jimmy Vasser, Christiano da Matta, Franchitti and Castroneves could jump into the top six, or out of the top 10 on the strength of a single race result.
Brack is pulling away in the Rookie of the Year standings, from Oriol Servia, who has 38 points, equivalent to 15th in the standings, and equal overall with Andretti's team-mate Christian Fittipaldi.
