Q & A with Neel Jani

Q: Good job today - how happy were you with your car, and your performance, today?

Neel Jani: I made a good start - the start was the clue for this win. I overtook Monfardini by doing a little trick on him - I got in the slipstream, pulled right and he went right, then I went immediately left, so he was on the right and I was already next to him, so he couldn't do anything. Then I could pull away with the new tyres, but I was struggling with the brakes and I just couldn't brake late - I was braking at 150 metres or even before, when normally you brake at 100 metres.

I locked up, and I just couldn't get the car down, so I just tried to make no mistakes, and in the end Rosberg was behind. Yesterday I had a big oversteer problem and we were two seconds off the pace, so we got rid of the oversteer and today I was one second quicker than yesterday, but the brakes still fucked me up today. There are still some things that don't fit together in our package, and if everything fits together then I'm sure I could fight for a win at every race, because I'm capable of it.

Q: You ran for a long time by yourself - was the team keeping you informed of what was happening behind you?

Jani: No, no - I could see it in the mirrors. I just tried to pull as much of a gap as possible because I knew that once Monfardini would fold then ... But I have to say that Monfardini shunted me in Turkey, but I forgive him after today! After the help he gave me today, I have forgotten the problems in Turkey now. I just saw that I needed to pull a gap but I couldn't, and then I lost a lot of time to Rosberg, at the first chicane, second chicane, massive time. At the two Lesmos and Ascari I could keep him, so it was just the braking that cost me, and we need to see how to solve that.

Q: With three laps to go Rosberg was three seconds behind you - were you confident of keeping him behind you at that stage?

Jani: I was after two laps, but on the last lap I wasn't so confident! He was so close I could smell him, and I had to be so careful not to make a mistake under braking, because if I missed the apex I would fuck up for the next straight, and I wanted to not let him get into my slipstream. So I could do it, and it was enough, but I was really happy that the race was finished!

Q: If the race had run for even one more lap, do you think you could have held on?

Jani: It's difficult because I couldn't brake late, and he could have easily outbraked me I think, because I was braking fifty metres too early. But nevertheless it's another win for me, it's six more points for the Championship and I think I'm back to fifth, so I'm happy.

Q: How important is this second victory for you and the team?

Jani: After yesterday's race for sure it's important, and for me it's nice but it's nothing special in the end. The first victory was the big one, I'd say - that was the big one because I had Kovalainen behind me, Pantano was there, and it was really hard. Today I think luck was with me a little bit, but you need to have that to win - Budapest was a real race win, fought from the beginning to the end - today also, but there we didn't have the luck, let's say.
