Piquet's GP2 switch

Nelson Piquet Junior has now officially confirmed that he will join forces with the HiTech team to stage an assault on the new GP2 Series next year, having successfully clinched this year's British Formula 3 Championship with his own outfit

The Brazilian is scheduled to line up alongside fellow Brazilian Alexandre Negrao, the leader of the South American F3 series, with David Hayle joining Felipe Vargas in running the outfit.

"I am really happy that I will be participating in the GP2 series in 2005," said Piquet. "The championship will be fantastic, there will be great drivers and it will be very challenging. There will be a great difference from Formula 3 and I am sure I will learn a lot. The car is much more powerful and more similar to an F1 car.

"The competition is also very important as everyone will be watching the championship and it will be vital to perform well to get noticed. It's going to be a tough season as everyone will want to win, but it's new for everyone and I think I have a good chance because my experiences in F3 and F1 will help me.

"I've driven on several of the circuits for racing and testing which will be very useful. It's going to be an exciting season and a very important step up in my career."
