Magny-Cours: Enge beats Bourdais again

Former grand prix ace Tomas Enge closed the gap on Formula 3000 points leader Sebastien Bourdais by holding off the Frenchman to claim victory at Magny-Cours on Saturday afternoon

It was the Czech's second win in a row and third of the season in total, leaving him just five points behind Bourdais with four races to go.

Enge made the better start from his pole position, but Bourdais went on the attack at the Adelaide hairpin. The pair ran side-by-side all the way to the Imola chicane, where Bourdais ran on to a kerb and was forced to cede.

The Super Nova racer always kept Enge within his range and when the Arden Lola developed a misfire over the last 15 laps, it looked like he might take the lead. But Enge held on to take a well-deserved victory.

Giorgio Pantano claimed third place despite losing out to Mario Haberfeld away from the start. The Brazilian had to settle for fifth by the end as compatriot Antonio Pizzonia found a way past.

The race was interrupted by a safety car period after 12 laps. Nicolas Kiesa clashed with Derek Hill at the final corner, pushing the American into a roll. Hill emerged without injury.

F3000 new boy Thed Bjork also suffered a roll - before the race had even begun! Alex Sperafico rammed into the back of the Nordic car on the warm-up lap, causing the start to be delayed...
