Lopez Thrilled with Maiden Win

Jose Maria Lopez was overjoyed to be the fourth winner in as many races in the GP2 series, stating  his consistent competitive form will help him in his fight for the Championship

Lopez Thrilled with Maiden Win

Lopez had a troubled race yesterday after leading early in the race before car trouble saw him fall off the track before eventually finishing sixth, putting him third on the grid. But today's race saw a marked change of fortunes for the Argentinean.

"After yesterday I wanted a really good result," Lopez said. "And this is the best result possible."

"It feels great because today I wasn't the fastest out there but we could still win. For sure I was lucky because of [pole-sitter Xandi] Negrao (who had a cluch failure), but I got a good start and was controlling it and pulling out a gap until the safety car came out, and then I just controlled the race after that."

Lopez had a trouble free run to the flag, well clear of events behind him, claiming the win but, more importantly for him, six vital points which bring him up to third in the Championship, just three points off the lead.

With the Championship his true aim, Lopez was delighted to move into contention, stating: "We were always competitive so far and we're always in the top three or so, and that's so important for the Championship."
