Lifeline to bottom F3000 teams for next year

The bottom of the table Formula 3000 teams have been thrown a lifeline by motorsport's governing body, the FIA, after failing to secure automatic qualification for next year's International F3000 championship

The top 12 of 15 teams automatically qualify for next year's series and the three remaining slots are for the top team in Italy's domestic F3000 series and any newcomers wishing to enter. But if these places are not filled, they are to be offered to the teams from this year which failed to finish in the top 12.

The bottom teams, most notably the Kid Jensen Racing squad, must therefore sweat it out to see if any new teams come forward to take up the available places.

Talking to Autosport's sister title Motoring News, Vincent Franceschini of Kid Jensen Racing said: "We are cautiously optimistic. It has been hard for us formulating plans, because drivers are afraid we won't be able to do the series. But we are carrying on. We want to race in F3000 and are planning plenty of testing because we want to make sure we are properly prepared."

In preparation for next year American driver Derek Hill, son of 1961 Formula 1 World Champion Phil Hill, is set to strike a deal to test with KJR at the Jerez track in Spain later this month.
