I've Delivered, Says Jani
Q: You've held on through race-long pressure to take your first win. How does it feel?
Neel Jani: Well, really good, and I think today I will sleep very well! I had a good start, the car was really good in the beginning, and it didn't go down in performance as much as in the other races - it went down, but not so much. I really have to say thank you to the team for this good improvement. Still, we can improve some more, but we still won, and that's very good to know.
Q: Was it the early race stint that won it for you?
Jani: Yeah - for the first five laps I was just ahead of [Heikki Kovalainen], but then after that I could push ahead of Giorgio [Pantano] quite a bit, and I think that was just where I got it. But then in the end I got a little bit slow before the pitstop because I just broke down a little, but after the pitstop it was okay again. It was close, several times, but enough is enough and I've won at last!
Q: And then you had the restart, which was fairly dramatic.
Jani: Yeah - I'd say he [Heikki] took quite a risk there, and he looked more like a Japanese driver than a Finnish one! I saw there was a yellow spot in my mirrors, and I thought wow, there is someone flying there, and I opened and he went by and I just managed to get back in, but I think he took a lot of risk there.
Q: You've been talking about it for a while, but now you've managed to take your first GP2 win.
Jani: Well for myself it is at last done, and now for sure there is more to come. But I think for you guys, you were starting to not believe me a little bit! I have proved it now, because I always knew that I could do it and that I could compete with these guys here - we just needed to get it a little bit right, and now I think it is more or less right. And there is more to come.
Q: How important is this win for the team?
Jani: I think it's their first win at that level, and for a Spanish team also it's really important. It's quite important for Telefonica and Repsol as the team sponsors, and for me and Red Bull it is perfect - that's what they've always watched for, and I've delivered and I'm very happy about that. I think everybody won today in our team, and of course I'm the first Red Bull driver to take a win in GP2, so even if I don't have the best car like the other guys do sometimes, I can still do it too!
Q: You've been talking about getting the setup right and getting a win - is this now the magic setup?
Jani: I think it's still not done - we made quite a big improvement, but we're not there and it's not perfect. And that gives me even more hope, because we are not perfect and I could win. That's nice to know - we can still do more.
