GP2 Asia scales back to two venues

GP2 organisers have confirmed that this winter's Asia Series will take place entirely in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain

Although an additional event in Qatar had been considered, GP2 bosses have decided that given the current economic conditions it makes more sense to limit transportation costs and race at just two circuits.

The eight-round mini-championship will therefore commence at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 31 October and 1 November, with the cars remaining at the Yas Marina track for a second event on 5-6 February 2010, before heading to Sakhir for a round alongside V8 Supercar on 26-27 February and then to support the Formula 1 season-opener at the venue on 13-14 March.

Series boss Bruno Michel underlined that scaling back from 12 rounds to an eight race calendar at just two tracks was a temporary measure driven by the economic situation.

"I am happy to note that this calendar is in line with the economical strategy we implemented in GP2 Series this year," said series boss Bruno Michel.

"We put together a programme that will not only generate good racing but will also keep costs in check and therefore will keep our series healthy.

"In fact, organising four rounds this time around compared to six the previous season, and having all of them take place only in the Middle East helps maintaining the freight costs at a reasonable level for everyone.

"Of course, for the seasons to come, the number of races will be revised."

The previous GP2 Asia championships were 10-12 rounds in length, with races in Dubai, China, Malaysia, Qatar and Indonesia featuring alongside Bahrain on their schedules.
