Glock remains cautious for finale
Timo Glock says he will continue to take a 'safety first' approach into today's GP2 Series finale at Valencia, despite holding a commanding position over title rival Lucas di Grassi
iSport's Glock only needs to finish fourth today to be crowned champion, even if di Grassi of ART wins today's sprint race with fastest lap. However, di Grassi starts 21st after he crashed out in yesterday's feature, and Glock starts the reverse grid race from the front row.
Glock, who finished seventh, said: "I made no mistakes yesterday, and starting on wets was the right decision for the championship. I could have gone off on slicks and looked stupid.
"For today, I just want to stay out of trouble on the first lap, and see what happens from there. If there's a chance to win, then I'll take it."
Glock will use new material brake pads today, after iSport ran out of its regular supply yesterday. Glock tried them in Friday's free practice, and he didn't like the long pedal and lack of rear braking it gave him.
However, tweaks ahead of this morning's warm-up has left him feeling much happier about using them.
Meanwhile, di Grassi knows he faces the tallest of orders today. After starting on wet tyres yesterday, he clashed with Nicolas Lapierre off the startline, and then again with Ho-Pin Tung, which put him briefly in gravel. After pitting for slicks, he spun off the track.
"We took a gamble, and it was the wrong decision," he said. "Timo was well ahead of us, so we had to do something different to him.
"It rained again as soon as we put slicks on, and because they were cold I just had no grip and went out. I had to keep pushing."
Di Grassi would need to finish second without fastest lap, or third with it, to win the championship if Glock doesn't score.
