Carroll Wins Shortened Race Two

Adam Carroll has won race two at Spa-Francorchamps from pole position, after the race was stopped on lap ten as a result of a number of accidents at the top of Eau Rouge in a heavily rain affected race

Carroll was never headed throughout and finished almost eighteen seconds ahead of Borja Garcia and 34 seconds in front of third placed Scott Speed.

The race start was delayed by more than an hour as a result of damage incurred to the crash barriers in a support race earlier in the morning, and was started under the safety car due to the intense rain.

The cars were let go on lap one, and Carroll streaked away from the field on the first of a string of fastest laps. Behind him Xandi Negrao was falling back, holding up his pursuers until Garcia blew by him at Les Combes.

Further back Ernesto Viso was on a charge, overtaking Nico Rosberg and piling on the pressure to Speed. One lap later and Les Combes saw more overtaking - Juan Cruz Alvarez muscled his way by Negrao, with Viso also cleanly through Speed.

Further back Neel Jani was having a torrid time in the spray, with Alex Premat forcing his way past through Eau Rouge and forcing the Swiss driver into a spin.

A lap later Viso was continuing his fine race, easily dispatching Negrao and then Alvarez before setting off after Garcia, who had no answer for the speed of Carroll out in front.

Negrao clearly didn't have the pace of his contemporaries - he was dropping like a stone, and was overtaken by Speed and Rosberg in successive laps, with Speed also forcing his way past Alvarez out of Eau Rouge for fourth place.

With the rain increasing in volume on lap seven Rosberg also powered by Alvarez, who had taken a gamble by increasing his rear wing before the race, a gamble which clearly didn't come off.

Further back Heikki Kovalainen was trying to get into a points paying position to make up for his mistake yesterday - after starting 15th on the grid he was all over the rear wing of Jose Maria Lopez, who was seventh and struggling to maintain his position.

On lap nine all hell broke loose - Ernesto Viso crashed out of third after clipping the kerb and launching into a lurid spin at the top of the hill at Eau Rouge, heavily impacting the barrier and seriously damaging his car.

Just a few seconds later Gianmaria Bruni got loose coming up the hill after Eau Rouge, and Hiroki Yoshimoto moved right to overtake him. Bruni twitched back across the track and tapped the Japanese driver, who was immediately off the track and into the barriers.

Yoshimoto was a passenger as his car rebounded onto the track and Neel Jani, with nowhere to go, hit the crippled car in a massive collision. Both men flew along the barriers on the left side of the track, destroyed their cars in the process.

Jani and Yoshimoto were able to climb out of the wreckage unaided, but were immediately taken to the medical centre for a check up.

With debris spread all over the track there was no option but to bring out the safety car, which was almost immediately turning into a red flag. The drivers stopped in front of the pitstops and, with time running out, the race was stopped for good.

With the race not reaching 75 percent of the race distance half points will be issued to winner Adam Carroll, who led Garcia, Speed, Rosberg, Alvarez and Negrao across the line on lap ten. Carroll also claimed the fastest lap in the carnage strewn race.

Rosberg stretched his narrow lead in the Championship over rival Kovalainen, with the gap now just 3.5 points between them, and the German's result means that his ART team now lead the team's Championship by 38.5 points over Arden, handing the French outfit the title with just two rounds in Bahrain remaining in the season.
