Bruni on Pole at Wet Spa

Gianmaria Bruni has taken a fortunate pole position for race one at Spa-Francorchamps, setting the fastest time just prior to an increase in the rain and a series of red flag stoppages in today's qualifying session

Bruni on Pole at Wet Spa

With heavy rain from the beginning of the session, qualifying was always likely to be a lottery. And so it proved - six drivers held the top spot at various times, but Bruni set his fastest lap at the right time and reaped the rewards of his good timing.

Bruni's lap time of 2:14.273 was four tenths faster than Alex Premat and Nicolas Lapierre, with the top eleven drivers separated by just one second.

Lapierre set the third fastest lap with ten minutes to go and then spun at the exit of Eau Rouge as the volume of rain increased, stopping on track and bringing out the red flags for the session.

When the Frenchman's car was removed from the circuit the remaining drivers rushed out to attempt to improve their times, but just minutes later the session was red flagged once more for a heavy impact into the barriers by Nico Rosberg, once again at the top of the hill after Eau Rouge.

The session restarted a few minutes later, with time remaining for just one flying lap. Nelson Piquet Jr looked set to claim the top spot with a storming run to the flag, but Giorgio Pantano spun, bringing out the red flags once more as the session finished, and Piquet's lap was destroyed.

Behind the top three Heikki Kovalainen slots into fourth on the grid, six tenths off pole, while fellow championship contender Nico Rosberg will be disappointed with himself after setting only the eleventh fastest lap.
