Zolder 2: Montagny takes easy win

Championship leader Franck Montagny scored a dominant win in the second race of the Superfund World Series by Nissan at Zolder. From pole position he made the perfect start and was never headed during the 26-laps

Montagny said: "I pushed very hard at the beginning and I could lap much quicker than the cars behind. Later on I slowed down because I had a problem with the rear tyre wear, but it was a very good race for me."

In the early stages Montagny was almost two seconds faster than the chasing pack, which was initially headed by Gabord Competicion team-mate Heikki Kovalainen. However, the Finn's car was not handling too well and he spun handing second to Adrian Campos Motorsport's Marc Gene.

However, the Williams Formula 1 test driver would not make the finish of the race after he was taken out of second on the last lap by Racing Engineering's Bas Leinders. The local hero was trying to make a move on Jean Christophe Ravier for third place going into the Villeneuve chicane when the Frenchman moved to the left, forcing Leinders onto the grass. Under braking Leinders spun, collecting the unfortunate Gene on his way into the gravel.

Ravier carried on unharmed to take second, while Carlin Motorsport's Narain Karthikeyan was promoted to third. Bruno Besson was fourth for Saulnier Racing, just ahead of the second Carlin car of Bruce Jouanny, who drove a great race to fifth after stalling on the grid and starting last. Norbert Siedler completed a strong weekend by taking sixth for Zele.
