Power Claims Pole in Oschersleben
Will Power continued his pursuit of World Series by Renault's Championship leader Robert Kubica, by claiming pole position for tomorrow's Oschersleben sprint race
Power, who won two of the last three races, picked up the bonus point for the top qualifying spot after lapping the German track in 1:12.056. It was his third pole position of the season.
The Carlin Motorsport driver was in the second batch of drivers and just edged out KTR's Tristan Gommendy in the closing minutes of the session.
Gommendy was only 0.031 seconds off Power's time and was pushing so hard that he spun during the session before setting his fastest lap.
However, despite Gommendy's second fastest time, he will not join Power on the front row. That honour will go to Kubica, who topped the times in the qualifying session for the first batch of runners.
The average of the five fastest times of each session was outside the 0.3 per cent window for determining the grid on times alone, required by sporting regulations. Therefore, all those in Power's session will line up on the right-hand side of the grid in the odd-numbered slots, and those in Kubica's slower session will line up on the left-hand side in the even-numbered gird slots.
Gommendy will therefore line-up third, ahead of Power's teammate Andreas Zuber in fourth, while Markus Winkelhock gave the home crowd something to hope for, with fifth place on the grid.
