Moto2 champion Pol Espargaro tests FR3.5 car but crashes

The 22-year-old, who beat Scott Redding to the Moto2 title at the end of last month, got behind the wheel of the Pons Racing car as part of a present for his championship-winning season.

Espargaro's test came to early finish, however, as he lost control of his car before the chicane, hitting the tyre barriers.

Despite the incident, Espargaro admitted he had thoroughly enjoyed his maiden outing in FR3.5 machinery.

"It was great," said the Spaniard. "A totally different experience from riding bikes, and a fantastic feeling.

"The WSR car is really incredible, I was impressed with the power, the handling and the brakes, which are phenomenal.

"The few laps I drove really gave me a thrill, and also the awareness that to drive properly such a sophisticated machine, one needs some training and preparation, which I didn't have.

"Unfortunately, I gave too much throttle in the corner before the chicane. Still, it was a great day for me and I thank Pons Racing for the opportunity.

"I always enjoyed cars and who know, one day when I'll be much older and out of bike racing, I may consider four-wheel racing."

Espargaro will move up to MotoGP next season, replacing Ducati-bound Cal Crutchlow alongside Bradley Smith at Tech 3 Yamaha.
