Kubica Wins Dramatic 2nd Race

Robert Kubica won a dramatic second race in the World Series by Renault series weekend at Zolder, keeping his head while those around him lost theirs to claim the top step of the podium when the race was red flagged

Will Power was on pole from race one winner Enrico Toccacelo, who took the lead when the Australian bogged down at the start before managing to stay ahead of the closing pack.

Jaap Van Lagen was all over Power for the opening laps, followed by Adrian Valles and Kubica. It gave Toccacelo the chance to pull away slightly before Power settled himself and got some breathing space from his pursuers.

It wasn't to last: Power ran wide and lost his car on turn in, throwing his car across the track to a stop and a potential top result away.

With a clear lap in front of him Van Lagen set about reeling in Toccacelo, catching him quickly and then running lap after lap all over the rear of the Italian's car. The pace was tremendous: the pair pulled five seconds clear of Valles before the pitstops began.

Van Lagen was the first of the lead pair to come in, rejoining in third behind Kubica and Markus Winkelhock, who had both already stopped. Toccacelo enjoyed a number of laps with no one in his mirrors, running slower than his pursuers but faster than he had previously run.

After his stop Toccacelo came out second behind Kubica, 3.4 seconds behind the Pole. The safety car was brought out shortly thereafter to remove the car of Eric Salignon, who had struck the tyre wall near the pit complex heavily and wedged the car into the barrier.

Van Lagen, now in fourth, spun behind the safety car, falling back to twelfth. As if in sympathy the safety car itself spun just before it was due back in, bunching up the whole field just two turns before they were to be released!

Kubica made a good restart, but Winkelhock was too close behind Toccacelo and knocked him off track and into retirement; the German was also slowed, allowing Andreas Zuber through into second place as Celso Miguez slowed just behind him, stopping on the side of the track.

The mayhem behind him gave Kubica was given a free pass to run away from his pursuers, which he duly took advantage of until the race was red flagged following a shocking accident when Giovanni Tedeschi flipping end on end, finishing on top of the tyres at the other side of the gravel trap after running over Matteo Meneghello's wheel, who ran off track with him. Thankfully both drivers walked away unaided.

Robert Kubica was pleased to claim the early lead in the championship, noting: "This rounds off what has been an excellent weekend, except for my qualifying times, which were average. I had precious little to lose in this race, and so the team attempted a daring strategy which paid off for me in the end."
