ISR wants to run Robin Frijns in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2012

ISR team boss Igor Salaquarda is keen to run Formula Renault Eurocup champion Robin Frijns in Formula Renault 3.5 next year

The Czech squad - a frontrunning team for the past two years - gave Frijns his maiden FR3.5 test at Barcelona on Wednesday, the 2010 Formula BMW Europe champion finishing 14th fastest in the morning and 13th in the afternoon session, despite being slowed by a stiff neck and flat-spotted tyre.

"Robin will be quick in the future, that's for sure," said Salaquarda. "He was a bit unlucky. He is quick on used tyres and has a good feeling for the car, but on new tyres he isn't able to use their full potential yet, which is understandable. Moreover, he had a neck pain so it was no wonder he had a problem keeping his head up after few laps."

Salaquarda would ideally like to partner Frijns, who won a 500,000 Euro scholarship to participate in the 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 series as part of his Eurocup prize, with a more experienced driver.

"I can imagine that Robin will race for us next year and I would like to get one of the experienced driver as well. We're talking with some of this year's winners. Carlin probably will have a pair of rookies from British F3. We would like to fight for the title with an experienced driver."

Frijns is working on raising the remainder of the backing required to secure a drive in the series.

"The Euro 500,000 prize I received from Renault Sport Technologies for winning my title was very handy," said Frijns. "But I still need to raise more funds for 2012. We're working on that now. [Wednesday's] goal was to build up my confidence lap by lap. The cornering speed is rather impressive and physically the car is so much more demanding than Formula Renault 2.0. My neck hurt... but I improved throughout the day, even sending the car into a spin. But that's all part of the learning curve!"
