Hungaroring FR3.5: Robin Frijns sweeps to second Hungary pole

Robin Frijns edged Kevin Magnussen to take pole position for the second Formula Renault 3.5 race of the weekend in Hungary

The two rookies, who were the class of the field on Saturday as well, traded blows in the final stages of Sunday morning's session, with championship leader Frijns coming out on top by just 0.007 seconds to secure his second pole position of the weekend.

, the Dutchman had been the pacesetter for the majority of the session, before facing an onslaught in the closing stages as others improved.

Kevin Korjus, Arthur Pic and Magnussen all enjoyed brief stints at the top, before Frijns managed to regain pole with two minutes remaining. He and Magnussen kept setting very similar times for the rest of the session, but neither could quite improve.

Pic ended up best of the rest for DAMS in third, while Antonio Felix da Costa was the only frontrunner to improve in the final minute as he took fourth. Marco Sorensen rounded out the top five.

Will Stevens completed a good qualifying for Carlin by taking his best grid position of the season in sixth. Behind him Frijns's championship rivals had to settle for slots on the fourth and fifth rows of the grid.

Jules Bianchi, who is at a tyre disadvantage today after suffering a puncture in Saturday's qualifying, could only manage seventh on the grid. But it was looking so much worse earlier on, as the Ferrari junior driver sat 25th after everyone had completed their first runs.

An engine change brought Sam Bird closer to the pace (0.4s off pole compared to 0.7 for race one) after he , but despite briefly looking like a factor in the battle at the front he eventually slipped to ninth, just behind Bianchi's former Tech 1 team-mate Korjus.
